Fremantle icon re-born as the Villa Roma by cafe strip pioneer
Closing its doors after 52 years in April, the Roma legacy seemed to be finally over when the daughters of restaurant founders Nella and Frank Abrugiato made the difficult decision to move on.
But Nunzio Gumina, the man originally behind Old Papa’s, alfresco dining on South Terrace and nowadays Limoncello, has stepped into the fray to make sure a Fremantle institution continues and will re-open the doors on November 20 under the name Villa Roma.
Fremantle Mayor Peter Tagliaferri has welcomed the re-launch of the restaurant, given the original was one of WA’s top hospitality icons for more than half a century.
"The Roma almost had a cult following and packed them in, right until the very end, with its old Freo feel," he said. "And the recipe for success was simple – good food matched with good service, making guests feel at home in a house of good cooking."
